The Maryland Turfgrass Survey- Our Industry Counts!!
The Maryland Turfgrass Council proudly presents the 2007 Maryland Turfgrass Survey. Using data collected and compiled by the Maryland Field Office of the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, under the direction of Mr. Norman Bennett, State Statistician, this report represents the most comprehensive documentation to date of the value of the Maryland Turfgrass Industry. At a time when fruit, crop and livestock production are declining, Marylands green industry is not only thriving, but
emerging as the preeminent agricultural enterprise of the state. Turfgrass cultivation ranks foremost among the green industry components. Sod farms, golf courses, parks, home lawns, sports fields and commerce parks, along with other open spaces constitute an enormous amount of acreage that is vitally important to the economy and environment of Maryland.
The Maryland Turfgrass Council hopes that the data and information in this report will serve to inform the citizens of Maryland about the importance of the turfgrass industry to our state. This
information will be used by industry professionals to promote the value of our industry to the public and to lawmakers at all levels of government. It also can be used to guide sensible legislation that will recognize the many benefits of turfgrass. Furthermore, it can be used by educators to convey the important role of turfgrass and the many employment opportunities available within our industry.
This survey was funded solely by the turfgrass industry. No State or Federal funds were used for this survey or its publication. The Maryland Turfgrass Council and the Maryland Turfgrass Association together have spearheaded fundraising efforts. We sincerely appreciate the many generous contributions from
professionals in the green industry, and the support we have received from our industry partners.
